Lagos State Government has opened registration for the maiden edition of the Lagos Cleaner Energy Schools Innovation Challenge (LCESIC) 2026, an initiative designed to encourage secondary school students to develop innovative clean energy solutions.
Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, who announced the registration yesterday, said the programme was part of commitment to youth empowerment, innovation and sustainable development.
According to him, the initiative seeks to inspire the next generation of energy innovators by nurturing creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills among students.
He said that the state’s vision was to build an innovation ecosystem where students would recognise the value of their ideas and receive government’s support to transform them into practical solutions.
However, the challenge is open to eligible Senior Secondary School One (SS1) and Senior Secondary School Two (SS2) students in Education Districts I, II and III. Participating schools are expected to constitute teams comprising five students, a supervising teacher and a mentor.
Ogunleye said that participating teams would develop practical clean energy solutions within designated technical tracks and compete at district-level contests before advancing to the state championship.
He added that the initiative aligns with the Lagos State Government’s THEMES+ agenda by strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, promoting youth development, advancing clean energy innovation and positioning the state as a leading hub for technological advancement.
He, therefore, encouraged eligible secondary schools across the three education districts to register their teams through the official application portal, noting that further details on eligibility requirements, competition guidelines and the registration process are available on the state government’s website.
