LASG rehabilitates 989 roads in 10 months

The Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) on Friday said it had rehabilitated 989 roads between June 2015 and date.

Ayotunde Sodeinde, General Manager of the corporation, disclosed this to newsmen after he had inspected some of the roads in the metropolis.

Sodeinde, who is also a Special Adviser to Gov Akinwunmi Ambode and Chief Executive Officer of the corporation, said the state government was committed to repairing many roads across Lagos State.

The GM with his team inspected Queen’s Drive, popularly referred to as Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, and Bourdillon Street in Ikoyi as well as Karnel Street in Surulere.

He said that the corporation placed Oyinka Abayomi Drive on its priority list because it was usually flooded during the rainy season due to the absence of drainage channels.

So, the corporation began the project with the construction of drains, he said.

The governor directed that we should not concentrate on repairing deplorable roads on the mainland alone , we should also look for bad roads on the Island that are yearning for repairs, hence, we identified this place.

We got complaints that there used to be a lot of water on this road during the rainy season.

Water on this road could not flow into the lagoon because some people have built houses on the drainage thus blocking the outflow of water.

We have to construct the drain and we are now laying asphalt on the road.

This road links one stretch of Bourdillon Street to another through the French Embassy and it is about three kilometers’ long,’’ he said.

He explained that the project which began last October would be delivered within the next 10 days to its residents.

Sodeinde also inspected 13 other roads adding that rehabilitation on some of them roads had advanced to a level where the corporation would begin to lay asphalt.

Sodeinde said that rehabilitation of all the 13 roads would be completed within four months.

He explained that more roads would be repaired across the state as the need arose.

The general manager said that the corporation was also educating residents on the need to shun various habits of road abuse that caused road degeneration in the past.

He assured the residents of Karnel Street whose water supply had been disrupted that the Lagos State Water Corporation would be contacted to fix it. (NAN)
