LASWA threatens to sanction boat operators over passengers’ safety
The Managing Director, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Damilola Emmanuel has threatened that boat operators who do not give priority to safety and endanger the lives of passengers would be penalized.
Emmanuel gave the warning yesterday during the distribution of 1000 lifejackets to boat operators along the Ojo and Badagry axis. He said about 300 of the lifejackets given out were for children as they want better safety for school children who commute on water. He maintained that donation to operators and passengers is part of efforts aimed at promoting safety on water and operators should deploy them and not keep them at home or sell them.
Emmanuel called for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to ensure that the waterways are safe and better patronage of the waterways for commuting and economic activities. He told the operators that it is their primary responsibility to provide lifejackets to passengers, as the ones being provided were to support them.
Lagos State Chairman of the Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transport of Nigeria (ATBOWATON), Lawal Babatunde Saheed commended LASWA for supporting them.
