In view of the late opening of polls coupled with the difficulties in locating polling units, Yiaga Africa has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to sanction transport workers that delayed in the delivery of election materials.

Chairman, Yiaga Africa Watching The Vote, Dr. Hussaini Abdu who made this demand on Saturday in Abuja described the act as a breach of contractual obligation and called on the electoral body to extend the time of voting to ensure that all eligible voters exercise their franchise.

Abdu also urged the commission to publish a comprehensive list of affected polling units on its online and offline platforms timeously.

According to Abdu, INEC must issue clear and unambiguous communication on the extension of voting time to all polling officials and the public.

He urged the commission to investigate the reasons responsible for the late deployment of election materials and personnel, including the late activation of the Registration Area Centers (RACs) as well as cases of breach of contractual obligations by transport workers.

He said: “INEC should implement its guidelines on cases where elections will hold the next day.

Ensure timely response to issues raised at polling units such as malfunctioning of the BVAS, location of polling units, ensure compliance with the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines:

“Yiaga Africa calls on INEC polling officials to ensure strict compliance with the electoral guidelines, especially in the usage of BVAS to accredit voters and the upload polling unit results on the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV).
“INEC should fulfill its commitment to release the polling unit level data on collected PVC on its website,” he said.

Yiaga Africa notes that INEC is yet to release the comprehensive data of collected PVC per polling unit.
