LAWMA launches digital contest to boost waste management awareness

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has introduced a new initiative aimed at promoting environmental responsibility through digital storytelling. The “Adopt-A-Bin” Digital Competition, unveiled on September 1, seeks to engage Nigerians in creating content that highlights the importance of proper waste disposal.

According to LAWMA, the competition is open to students, creatives, and sustainability advocates across the country. Participants are expected to submit original content in formats such as videos, posters, infographics, or animations, using the agency’s green bin as the central symbol of communal responsibility.

A spokesperson for LAWMA explained the motivation behind the campaign: “We’re calling on creatives, students, and sustainability advocates to use their voices and visual talents to champion a cleaner, greener Lagos. The Adopt-A-Bin initiative is more than a competition; it’s a movement that merges creativity with climate responsibility.”

The campaign, running until September 30, is designed to raise awareness about bin adoption, encourage youth involvement in environmental advocacy, and foster partnerships between government, private organisations, and civil society.

Winners will be rewarded with cash prizes ranging from ₦250,000 to ₦1 million. Submissions will be assessed based on creativity, visual appeal, environmental messaging, and engagement on social media.

By linking digital content creation with environmental education, LAWMA aims to expand its public sensitisation efforts beyond traditional outreach. The agency noted that the competition aligns with broader sustainability goals for Lagos, where waste management remains a pressing challenge due to rapid urbanisation and population growth.

Entries are to be shared on social media using the hashtag #AdoptABin, with participants required to tag the campaign’s official handles. The competition is organised in collaboration with Vivacity PR.
