Leaders rally for unity, deeper democratic participation at Ramadan Iftar

As Nigeria looks ahead to future elections, political leaders have called for renewed commitment to democratic participation, national unity and respect for the country’s electoral processes.

The call came during a Ramadan Iftar (breaking of fast) gathering hosted by Lilian Adebayo, which brought together politicians, civil society actors and members of the media in a setting that blended spirituality with reflections on Nigeria’s democratic future.

Speaking at the event, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (Nigeria), Sadiq Umar Gombe, underscored the importance of unity, religious tolerance and responsible political engagement in strengthening democratic institutions.

He noted that Ramadan gatherings such as the Iftar create a valuable space for political stakeholders to reflect on shared national values and build bridges across party lines.

According to him, although several political figures attended the event, the primary objective of the gathering was to foster dialogue, deepen mutual understanding and reinforce the spirit of national cohesion.

Gombe also paid tribute to the media, describing it as the “fourth estate of the realm,” and acknowledging its critical role in informing citizens, shaping public discourse and holding leaders accountable.

Also speaking, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Adewole Adebayo, stressed the need for policies that expand citizen participation in governance and electoral processes.

He said the spiritual lessons of Ramadan—particularly humility, discipline and accountability—should guide the conduct of political leaders and public officials.

Adebayo added that Nigeria’s rich religious and cultural diversity remains one of its greatest strengths and should inspire leaders to pursue justice, tolerance and national unity.

He further urged political institutions to create a more inclusive environment that encourages Nigerians to take active roles in elections, emphasising that broad voter participation is essential to democratic legitimacy and public trust.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, called for policy adjustments within Nigeria’s electoral framework to enhance democratic inclusion.

Dantalle expressed concern about certain provisions—such as indirect party primaries and the mandatory use of the National Identification Number in political processes—which he said could inadvertently restrict broader participation in politics.

He urged political stakeholders, including leaders of the ruling party, to support reforms that would strengthen Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and make the political space more inclusive.

The IPAC chairman also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to remain firmly committed to electoral rules and standards, noting that public expectations for future elections remain high.

Participants at the gathering concluded the evening with prayers for peace, unity and continued progress in Nigeria’s democratic journey, reinforcing the message that beyond politics, the nation’s future depends on collective responsibility and shared values.
