Members of the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State Chapter, at the weekend, took to the streets of the university town to protest the kidnap of their colleague, Dr. Paul Erie, who has been in the abductors’ den for almost three weeks.

Lectures and on-going examination by part time students have been suspended in the institution.

Erie was said to have been abducted on June 16 in his country home in Igbanke Orhionmwon local council, where he is also a palace chief.

A close friend of Erie told The Guardian that his colleague, who lectures in the department of Agricultural Economics and Extension, Faculty of Agriculture, had visited home on the fateful day when the kidnappers pounced on and kidnapped him.

According to him, “Erie was exchanging pleasantries with his neigbhours in Ignake, when dogs in his compound started barking. He adduced the barking to a usual action of the dogs when the overhead water tank in his house filled. He decided to go back to his house not knowing that his abductors were lurking in the premises. As he drove in, they immediately pounced on him, took him into the car at gunpoint and went away with cash and some electronics. They took the person with him in the car and threw him into the booth while they took my friend away in their vehicle”

The Guardian gathered that the abductors opened talks with the family and first demanded for N30 million, which was reduced to N12 million. They subsequently told the family members to drop whatever they could raise at a spot and that their breadwinner would be released but there is apprehension and anxiety in the family as six days after this directive was complied with, they are yet to see Erie.”
