Libya returnees, group commend, back governor as PDP moves to reclaim Edo

Some Libya returnees in Edo State yesterday applauded Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki on the recent award bestowed on him as best performing governor in Nigeria by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

The group also endorsed Obaseki for a second term, adding that the governor won the award in recognition of his efforts at improving basic education and teachers’ welfare in the state.

A statement by coordinator of the coalition, Solomon Okoduwa, revealed that the award was well deserved, adding that the teachers’ decision has restated the people’s confidence in Obaseki’s commitment to quality basic education in the state.

He also commended the governor and the teachers for their contribution to building a better education system in Edo State, stressing that the award was a reflection of the governor’s goodwill and performance in the education sector.

“Governor Obaseki has transformed the education sector and made the public school system to work again. Many parents now withdraw their children and wards from private schools to public schools, as a result of the transformation in the sector.

“We congratulate you on the successes in the education sector and the award bequeathed on you by the NUT,” the group said.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed support for the Dan Orbih-led state executive of the party, describing his tenure as exemplary and worthy of applause with a good road map to the 2020 Edo gubernatorial election and victory for the party.

At a stakeholder meeting hosted by former Governor of the state, Lucky Igbinedion, the party leaders agreed that Orbih’s stewardship and that of his executive have been exemplary and commendable.

Expressing confidence in Orbih and his executive, Chief Tom Ikimi, who spoke on behalf of Edo Central Senatorial district, Victor Oyofo, who spoke for Edo North Senatorial District and Igbinedion, affirmed that the Orbih-led executive has been exemplary.

The leaders, who adopted the agenda for the meeting and discussed the road map to 2020, agreed that it was the National Working Committee (NWC’s) responsibility to hold congresses that would usher in a new executive at the end of Orbih’s tenure.

Speaking after the meeting, state Publicity Secretary of the Party, Chris Nehikhare told journalists that it was resolved that Orbih would liaise with the NWC at the earliest possible time to work out a timetable for Edo congresses in 2020.

Nehikhare added that it was also resolved that the chairman and governorship positions would not be zoned, as the party would seek the best materials for both positions irrespective of the senatorial district.
