Makarfi urges calm among PDP members, supporters

Fomer governor of Kaduna State and People Democratic (PDP) and chairman of the party’s caretaker committee, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, has said that the judgment of the Appeal Court in Port Harcourt against his committee was a temporary set back, assuring members that the problem would be resolved soon.

Makarfi said though some leaders of the party, particularly PDP governors, led by Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose and Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin, have suggested that it would proceed to the Supreme Court, “all options are still open, either to take political or legal action in addressing the issue.”

He said all the leaders of the party have been put on notice for a meeting within the next three days to brainstorm on the judgment, recognised the executive led by former governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, as the authentic leadership of the party.

Makarfi urged all members of the party to remain calm and not to take the law into their hands, saying as opposition party, “we expected all that is playing out against the party.”

He added: “We have utmost respect for the judiciary. We may not agree with what it does from time to time, but there is a process of dealing with matters when we feel certain pronouncement did not go down well with us.

“We will study the lead judgment and minority judgment and consult widely. The party will meet, latest by Monday, and come out with our decision. As an individual, I cannot decide for the party until we meet.

“We are in the opposition; we should not be surprised by setbacks.  We assure all Nigerians that nothing is lost at this moment. We anticipated series of things happening and that is why we have been proactive.”
