Man docked for allegedly defrauding woman of N463, 000


naira-notesThe police on Thursday arraigned one Lawrence Essiet, in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly defrauding a woman of the sum of N463, 000.

Esseit who resides at Bwari, Abuja, is standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Mohammed Garba, told the court that one Anita Okechukwu of Area 1, Garki, Abuja, reported the matter at the Garki Police Station on May 15.

Garba said the accused, sometime in February, deceived Okechukwu and collected N463, 000 from her to purchase a car for her.

The prosecutor said that the accused allegedly switched off his cell phone after collecting the money and disappeared, but was later arrested by the police.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000, with a surety in like sum, and adjourned the case till June 29 for further hearing.
