Man on arraignment for alleged rape of minor dies in court

A 57-year old rape suspect, Sani Mohammed, Tuesday died on the premises of the Chief Magistrate Court 2 in Yola, Adamawa State.

Sani, a butcher from Wauru Jabbe in Yola South local government, had been in Yola prison for a year over alleged rape of a minor.

Our reporter learnt that the deceased was sick for about three weeks before his arraignment earlier today.

He had earlier appeared before Magistrate Japhet Ibrahim Basani, by the Commissioner of Police on the 24th August, 2020, and had been on holding charge before his demise.

The accused slumped and died while the court, presided by Magistrate Basani, was considering further directive that could aid his sudden poor health condition could be given.

Subsequently, the court has written the Controller Nigeria Correctional Centre Yola, to inform him of the incident for necessary action regarding the burial of the deceased.

Officials of the Nigeria Correctional Centre, where the suspect was remanded and who brought him to court, took his remains away from the court.
