A Nigerian man, Jonathan Biodun, who was jailed over an unpaid debt of ₦1,137,000, has regained his freedom after compassionate individuals raised funds to settle his obligation.
His case gained public attention when a group of Twitter influencers visited a correctional facility for a football match with inmates. During the visit, Jonathan discreetly handed a letter to one of the visitors, pleading for help.
In the letter, he addressed several influencers by name and wrote, “Please help me out. I know you all on Twitter. I have seen how you’ve helped people online… I am here because of a debt of ₦1,137,000.”

The letter was later shared on social media, drawing widespread sympathy.

A Twitter user, Sir Dickson, also known as #Wizarab10, amplified the plea, stating, “Nobody should be in prison over a debt. It is not a criminal offense. Imagine rotting in prison because you’re poor.”
A public donation campaign was launched, and within weeks, enough funds were raised to clear Jonathan’s debt. He was subsequently released from Apapa Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
In a video shared on social media, a grateful Jonathan expressed his appreciation, saying, “Hello, everyone. My name is Thomas Jonathan Biodun. I have just been released from Apapa Kirikiri Correctional Centre. I’m using this opportunity to thank everyone who donated, contributed, or supported me in any way. You have no idea what this freedom means to me.”
