A Lagos High Court in Ikeja, presided over by Justice Modupe Nicol-Clay, has convicted and sentenced Olayemi Ayomide to 10 years’ imprisonment for robbing a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member and an artisan.

The convict pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him by the Lagos State government, leading to his sentencing.
Ayomide was accused of robbing Adekanmbi Olubusayo, an NYSC member, and Hunwanu Adebayo, an artisan, on December 31, 2018, around the Surulere/Ojuelegba area of Lagos.
He stole items including ATM cards, an NYSC ID card, a driving licence, a Samsung C5 gold mobile phone, and N2,050 in cash.
The offences violated Sections 76(6) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011 and Sections 406(1) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
Initially arraigned on November 14, 2019, Ayomide pleaded not guilty. However, during the trial, he opted for a plea bargain. On October 19, 2024, he was re-arraigned on amended charges and pleaded guilty.
Justice Nicol-Clay, satisfied that the plea was voluntary, sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment, effective from January 3, 2019, when he was first remanded.
The prosecution’s case included testimonies from witnesses, including a commercial bus driver, Omowole Edwardson, who recounted how he intervened during the robbery, leading to Ayomide’s arrest. Another witness, Hunwanu Adebayo, detailed how she was attacked and robbed while returning from work.
The court noted that the 10-year sentence was appropriate given Ayomide’s admission of guilt and remorse.
