Man tells court how he, others escaped death

A MIDDLE-AGED man, Mr. Kenechukwu Agu, an engineer, told the Magistrate’s Court in Enugu on Wednesday how he and three members of his family escaped death in the hands of one Joseph Brown, who rammed into his car severally while attempting to stop his movement.

In a resumed hearing of the case presided over by Senior Magistrate, Ogechukwu Chime, Agu said the incident occurred on March 2, 2014 between 3.00p.m.-5.00p.m. while he was driving into Enugu town from Emene with his wife and two children on board.

Testifying before the court, he stated that even when he was pushed into the ditch with members of his family in the car screaming for help, “Joseph Brown attacked again, held me on my neck and attempted to strangle me.”

He told the court: “The incident happened on March 2, 2014 as I was driving into Enugu from Emene in my Toyota Camry with my wife and two children on board.” “One Joseph Brown had pursued us, slamming into our car severally from the rear zone with a Mercedes Benz car until the final hit that sent our car spinning and veering off the road into a ditch.” “The attack started from about Emene Junction to C to C, which is about a pole to the Nigerian Air Force base, Emene, Enugu; all along old Abakaliki Road, Emene.

I was carrying two of my children of ages two and five years and their mother.” “While still dazed, panic-stricken and in deep shock resulting from the incident with my children screaming and crying loudly, Joseph Brown rushed in and attacked us again. This time, he tore my shirt and held me on the neck, attempting to strangle me.”

He stated that the intervention of passers-by saved him and members of his family, adding that a senior Air force Officer, who rushed to the scene arrested Brown and handed him over to police officers from Emene Police Station.

Under cross-examination, Agu said he had never met or known Brown before, adding that “he was screaming that he would burn my car with everybody inside.” Magistrate Chime adjourned the matter to September 28 for further hearing.
