Militants Surrender Arms En-mass In Benue

No fewer than 175 militants have surrendered their illegal arms in Benue State, under Governor Samuel Ortom’s amnesty programme. About 366 arms and ammunition have been recovered, from the militants, by the state so far under the programme.

No fewer than 175 militants have surrendered their illegal arms in Benue State, under Governor Samuel Ortom’s amnesty programme. About 366 arms and ammunition have been recovered, from the militants, by the state so far under the programme.

Governor Ortom, who made the disclosure Friday evening during a meeting with those that have responded to the amnesty programme, also announced the release of N17 million for the purchase of the ammunition from their former owners.

He said that the amnesty committee will soon organise a retreat for those who responded to the amnesty, adding that the event would come up on between 14th and 15th of this month in Makurdi.

Ortom expressed appreciation to those who responded and assured them that they will be rehabilitated and integrated into their respective their community.

The Governor assured the people of Benue State of maximum security, as the state was ready to partner with security agencies to fish out those still hiding weapons to commit crimes in the state.
He reiterated his administration’s determination to provide enabling environment for the private sector to thrive, adding that it was imperative for the creation of jobs, wealth and opportunities for the people.

The leaders of the armed gangs, who led their members to surrender arms, Terzungwe Shiando, Msugh Tyavyar, and Terwase Akwaza expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to be reintegrated in the society.
They expressed joy at their freedom, adding that they had been living like animals in the bush for a long time.
