CHIEF of Army Staff (COAS), Waidi Shaibu, has approved the “immediate deployment” of troops in Plateau State to “decisively deal with the recent resurgence of terrorist attacks.”
The deployment was contained in a statement issued by Media Information Officer of the joint task force, Operation ENDURING PEACE, Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, and shared on the force’s X page.
According to the statement, the troops drawn from the COAS intervention battalion of special forces have already arrived in the state.
Oteh said their presence “will be a game changer in addressing the threat of insecurity.”
FOLLOWING the Woro attack, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), in conjunction with the Nigerian Army Headquarters, and other security services, has launched a new operation -Savannah Shield – aimed at flushing out terrorists from Kwara and Niger States.
Director Defence Media Operations (DMO), Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja, who disclosed this in a statement, said the new operation followed a presidential directive.
He also disclosed that Operation Savannah Shield was carved out from Operation Fansan Yamma (OPFY), tackling terrorism in the North West, and is designed to enhance security operations in Kwara and Niger.
On February 3, 2026, terrorists attacked Woro Village in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, during which they killed over 70 residents, but troops have since secured the community, conducting clearance and confidence-building patrols to reassure the residents of their safety.
On operations across the various theatres, the DMO said in the first week of February 2026, troops in the Northeast sustained clearance and counter-terrorism operations in the region, resulting in the neutralisation of scores of terrorists.
He stated that troops arrested one ISWAP/JAS logistics supplier at Jakana Village in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno, and recovered items suspected to have been abandoned by terrorists along the Mulumkoloye axis during a cordon-and-search operation in Konduga.
Onoja said during the period, the second batch of 700 Nigerian refugees was successfully repatriated from the Republic of Cameroon through the Banki border in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State on January 31, 2026.
