Minister harps on framework for water users associations
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Terlumun Utsev, has stressed the significant role of Water Users Associations (WUAs) in enhancing irrigation farming and food security in Nigeria, provided they are well-organised, managed, and strengthened.
Speaking at the opening of the South-South Regional Workshop on WUAs in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on October 15, the minister, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr Richard Pheelangwah, noted that the effective operation of WUAs could lead to improved performance in the irrigation sector, enhancing efficiency, ownership of irrigation infrastructure, and accountability among farmers.
Prof. Utsev encouraged participants to share their expertise and experiences, aiming to develop actionable policy guidelines for establishing and strengthening WUAs.
He stated, “I am confident that this workshop will generate innovative ideas and strategies to advance the irrigation sector, ultimately contributing to food security, wealth creation, poverty alleviation, and sustainable national development.”
In his opening remarks, Mr. Pheelangwah explained that WUAs, a joint initiative of the Federal Government and the World Bank through the Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) project, are designed to empower farmers and local communities in water management.
He noted their crucial role in ensuring equitable access to water for irrigation, which supports food security, livelihood improvement, and economic development within communities.
The ministry, in a statement on Thursday, said the event was attended by the Deputy Governor, Sen. (Dr.) Akon Eyakenyi, representing Governor Eno.
