Minister seeks return of mission, private schools to owners
THE Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalong, has called for the return of all schools taken over by the federal and state governments to their former owners.
He said this would bring back the moral, spiritual and ethical discipline which such missionary and private schools were known for in the past.
The minister made the call yesterday while receiving a seven-man delegation of Executive Members of the Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN) Recubelem Jos, led by the Leading Minister of the church, Rev. Yucaps Gwotts, who paid him a courtesy visit.
According to Dalong, the nation gained from the sound training, which such schools provided for the nation’s founding fathers; noting that the taking over of schools by government has not yielded the desired result.
He also appealed to the church to resuscitate youth programmes such as the Boys Brigade, Girls Guide, Red Cross and help provide sporting facilities to complement government’s efforts as deliberate character-mounding and empowerment strategies for the youth in order to produce patriotic and selfless leaders for tomorrow.
He apologised to the masses for the hardship being experienced due to the current fuel scarcity, which he explained to be caused by sabotage and greed of some stakeholders; saying a situation whereby large numbers of tankers loaded with the product left Lagos but never surfaced in Abuja seven days after leaves much to be desired.
He promised that the Federal Government is working to bring an end to the situation and ensure that petroleum products are available at the right price.
Dalong also said that as the year is running to an end, the capacity of Boko Haram insurgents to hold any territory in Nigeria has been totally decimated; adding that the major challenge now is how to convince the internally displaced people to return to their settlements.
