Promises to liaise with NDDC on Abia erosion menace

Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Usani Uguru Usani, has alerted that the current bombing of oil installations in the Niger Delta by some militants has caused economic hardship on the finances of the country.

He said that the situation the country has found itself presently has made it hard for it to work at the pace it had set out to.

Usani, who spoke yesterday at Nkwoagu Isuochi in Umunneochi Local Council of Abia State while inspecting some erosion-ravaged communities, pledged to liaise with the management of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to put in effect some urgent palliative measures.

He wondered why the contract awarded to address it was not executed, noting: “Six years after the contract was awarded, there has been nothing to show for its execution.”

Meanwhile, a member of the House of Assembly representing Umunneochi Constituency, Chief Ikedi Ezekwesiri who was present during the inspection, called for urgent action to check the menace and save the council headquarters.

He attributed the erosion menace to poor supervision by scheduled officers and improper drainage, saying this has put the entire community in dire straits, hence urgent measure needed to save his people and their property.

He added: “If the erosion is not checked on time, it will consume the main road, the village secondary school built over five decades ago and the police station, among other places.”

Also, a member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Constituency in the House of Representatives, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, recalled that she fought for the contract to be awarded after it was accommodated in the budget then but decried the attitude of the contractor.

Onyejeocha, who said she was not sure the contractor has the capacity to handle jobs of this magnitude, urged the minister to come urgently to save her people from further damage of their environment.
