The concerned people of Ogun State lamented the payment delay following the disbursement of gratuity to retirees from 2013 by the state government. The state government had earlier announced the payment of gratuity to the retirees on Monday, 21 August, through a post on its Twitter account.

According to the state government, the beneficiaries of the gratuity are teachers and local government workers who retired from February 2013. In the post, the government said, “His Excellency, Governor @dabiodunMFR, has released funds for the payment of gratuity to Ogun State retirees. With this payment, we are presently paying those who retired in February 2013 for both teachers and local government retirees. Those who retired in 2009 and 2010 had been paid by this administration a long time ago,” the government said.

Meanwhile, there have been different reactions to the announcement of the gratuity payment by the Twitter users. Bunmi Jimoh, while reacting to a repost of the announcement by the Special Adviser to the state Governor on New Media, said most of the people the government claimed to be paying might not be alive for the payment. Bunmi wrote, “2013? And we are driving towards the end of the year 2023…. Some of them are even late. May God forgive our leaders.”

Another Twitter user, Evidence Peter, with the username @evidenxe2real, however, advised the government to ensure the gratuity gets to the right beneficiaries and not people well known to the government. According to his Twitter response to the gratuity payment by the state government, “Please find out if you are really paying them and not only those who you know! Thanks!”

On his own part, Immanuel Afolabi blamed the government for the delayed payments and the automatic removal of 10 percent of workers’ salary. He wrote, “Hope it’s not from our 5 Billion naira? Because I don’t know why you didn’t pay them before. And are you still deducting 10% from their pay?”

Moreover, knocking on the government again, Yesleem Sabair wrote, “When you guys as governors retired, your payment after service never delayed, Eberu Eleda.”

Speaking in a different vein from previous reactions, Rotimi Calebs, with the Twitter username @Calebs_Oluleye, lauded the government for the gratuity payment. Caleb wrote that the payment will put things in circumspect. According to him, “This is a good report. I’m happy you are telling us the year that has been paid. This helps put things in perspective.”
