The Nigerian community in South Africa has confirmed the killing of one Clement Nwaogu allegedly burnt alive by a mob in the latest xenophobic attack in that country.

The Publicity Secretary of Nigeria Union in South Africa, Habib Miller, who confirmed the killing from Pretoria, added that the victim was an indigene of Njikoka local council in Anambra State.

He said the upholsterer was attacked and killed by a mob in Rustenburg, North West Province.

Miller stated that the victim was murdered in cold blood over his accent and habit, which the mob supposedly found offensive.

His words: “The mob descended on him like a common criminal with all sorts of dangerous weapons in the presence of South African police officers.

“Eyewitnesses say the victim beckoned for help but they turned a blind eye. When Nwaogu could no longer persevere, he ran for safety but the mob chased, caught, poured petrol and set him ablaze.”

He stated that the mob only left the deceased when they had certified he was died.

According to him, it was shortly after they left that some passersby called emergency personnel who took his charred body to the hospital.

Miller continued: “The eyewitnesses feeling that the victim was still alive called for help but unfortunately, Nwaogu could not survive the ordeal and died at Job Shimankane Hospital in Rustenburg.”
