In a heartwarming display of fashion, creativity, and care, Mohseams, a Nigerian fashion brand known for its quality tailoring and community-first values, kicked off The Alteration Project, a new initiative offering free clothing fixes and upcycling ideas to those who need it most.
The pilot edition took place on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the Itire-Ikate LCDA Hall in Surulere, Lagos, through the support of the Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Department, and alongside a larger women-focused event organised by the local government.
The aim was to show that fashion can serve, not just impress and that what you already have, and can still become something beautiful.
For two hours, a team of volunteers worked on basic clothing alterations like mending tears and adjusting hems. There was also a small showcase of upcycling ideas, from turning old trousers into stylish shorts to revamping worn pieces with a fresh touch. The energy in the room was full of excitement, curiosity, and appreciation.
“This project is about sustainability, dignity, creativity, and care. Sometimes, a little stitch or small restyle is all it takes to feel seen and valued again,” said Ngozi Fego Chiadika, founder of Mohseams and Afrifashion ProMotion, who also led the project.
More than just sewing or styling, The Alteration Project is a call to action for Nigerians to look at old clothes differently — not as waste, but as materials full of potential.
“Instead of throwing things away, we want people to think: What else can I do with this? Can I patch it? Can I restyle it? Can I pass it on to someone else?”
This pilot is only the beginning. A full-scale edition of The Alteration Project is in the works, with plans to reach more communities and spread the message of sustainable fashion in practical, empowering ways.
The event was organised in partnership with Afrifashion ProMotion, a platform committed to telling and amplifying African fashion stories in fresh, meaningful ways.
