Justice Mojisola Dada of a Special Offences Court has fixed June 10 to hear a report of an agreement between social media celebrity, Ismaila Mustapha, popularly known as Mompha and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Dada gave the date after both defence and prosecution counsel asked for an extension of time.

EFCC had filed an eight-count charge against Mompha and his company, Ismalob Global Investment Limited.

The anti-graft agency had alleged that Mompha conspired with others at large to launder money obtained through unlawful activities.

The charge also borders on retention of proceeds of criminal conduct, use of property derived from unlawful acts, possession of documents containing false information and failure to disclose assets.

However, when the case was called yesterday, the defence counsel, Mr. Kolawole Salami, who held brief for Mr. Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), told the court that discussions were ongoing with the EFCC.

Salami prayed to the court for an extension of time for both parties to reach a conclusion.

He said: “On our part, we have submitted a proposal to EFCC, but it was on Wednesday that we received its own proposal. So a meeting was held at the prosecution’s office to discuss terms of the proposal.”

He further told the court that both parties have agreed on one or two areas. He, therefore, prayed the court for a short date to report, noting that: ‘if they are not able to reach a conclusion, they would proceed to trial.

EFCC’s counsel, Mr. S.I. Suleiman, who confirmed the development, also prayed the court for a short adjournment to fine-tune the agreement.

The judge, subsequently, adjourned to June 10 for parties to report progress on the proposed settlement.
