Speaking at the event, held at Dr. Finik Park Oregun, Lagos, with the theme: ‘The King’s Guests’, the monarch advocated more special schools in the country to cater for the special population. He observed that special persons are not adequately taken care of in the society, stressing “there is ability in disability”. He called on leaders to implement policies and programmes that meet the needs of less privileged persons.
The monarch had, earlier in the year, donated space for a sign language class in his palace to encourage hearing-impaired persons in the community.
Speaking, the convener of Fingers Network, Treasure Uchegbu, said the event enables special children, parents and others to play, network, and learn.
A father and president of a hearing impairment disability group, Dayo Omotoye, urged parents to be observant of their children to notice any form of disability early in life.
He charged the government and stakeholders to adequately care for persons with disabilities, instead of paying lip service.
Another parent, Ruth Osas Adejumo, Chief Executive Officer of Ruthy Essentials, said she has a 10-year-old daughter with hearing impairment, which she discovered at age two.
According to her, she was able to weather the storm with the support of others. She urged parents and caregivers to show more love and attention to special children.
