MOSOP opposes return of Ogoni cleanup to ministry, wants project probed
Movement for Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has rejected presidential directive transferring the supervision of the Ogoni cleanup to Federal Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, and called for investigation into the project.
Its President, Fegalo Nsuke, in a statement made available to The Guardian, said the directive only reflected internal skirmishes to outsmart each other from addressing the endemic corruption associated with the exercise since 2016.
Nsuke declared: “The right thing to do is to halt all funding for the project and look into our allegations rather than switching supervisory ministries.”
He claimed Buhari had been wrongly advised on the decision, noting that the cleanup programme was originally under the supervision of the petroleum ministry before moving it to the environment ministry.
“The right steps to take at this time would be to set up investigation panel to look into allegations we have made. Unfortunately, the government appears not to have looked on the issues of corruption involving $200million in HYPREP,”Nsuke added.
