The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit (MSSNLagos) has urged the government to implement tougher security measures, boost funding for education and strictly enforce court rulings protecting the rights of Muslim female students to wear the hijab.
The call was made by the newly inaugurated Amir of the society, Dr. Ajibola Salami, during a press briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.
Speaking on behalf of the incoming administration, Dr. Salami noted that the leadership transition coincides with the commencement of the Islamic New Year, 1448AH,, a milestone he described as symbolic of renewal, purposeful leadership and a fresh commitment to service.
Dr. Salami acknowledged that the new executive team is stepping into office during a challenging period characterized by economic hardship, rising educational costs and high youth unemployment.
He expressed deep concern over how these economic realities hinder young Nigerians from accessing quality education and financial opportunities.
While commending the Federal Government for introducing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), MSSNLagos emphasized that loans alone are not enough. The group called for, Increased funding for educational infrastructure, research and innovation and expanded access to scholarships and bursary awards for students.
Addressing the nation’s security challenges, the society stated that despite the efforts of security agencies, the persistent threats of kidnapping, terrorism and banditry continue to jeopardize national development and student safety.
Dr. Salami strongly condemned criminal acts carried out under the guise of religion, clarifying that Islam stands firmly against terrorism, kidnapping and violence.
To curb the wave of insecurity, MSSNLagos advocated for the establishment of special courts dedicated to terrorism, kidnapping and banditry cases to ensure accelerated prosecution. The deployment of advanced, technology-driven security systems and enhanced protection protocols for schools and student communities across the country.
On the issue of religious freedom, the student body demanded the strict enforcement of court judgments affirming the right of Muslim female students to wear the hijab in public schools.
Dr. Salami noted with regret that despite existing legal protections, reports of harassment and restrictions still persist in certain institutions.
“Our administration will prioritize educational advancement, youth empowerment, leadership development, mentorship and the total protection of the rights and welfare of Muslim students across Lagos State,” Dr. Salami stated.
Looking forward to the 2027 general elections, the society urged political leaders to focus on peaceful, issue-based campaigns.
It also charged Nigerian youths to take charge of their futures by actively participating in the democratic process through voter registration and civic engagement.
MSSNLagos reaffirmed its enduring commitment to fostering educational excellence, championing religious freedom and nurturing responsible citizenship among the youth.
