
The Muslim Rights Concerns (MURIC) has tasked National and State Assembly lawmakers to commence the process of repealing laws that empower governors to depose traditional rulers.
The MURIC director, Prof Ishaq Akintola on Tuesday particularly asked the Sokoto State House of Assembly to lead the crusade by initiating a process to repeal section six of the state’s law that empowers the governors to depose monarchs including the highly revered Sultan of Sokoto and President General Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA.)
Speaking at the the Conference on Islam In Nigeria (COIN,) jointly organised by the Islamic Welfare Foundation (IWF) and the Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, on Tuesday, Akintola described governors’ powers and local government chairmen as, “draconian and obnoxious,” adding: “it is UnAfrican to deposd our traditional rulers”.
Themed: “Social and Technology Development Architecture: The Role of Religion”, the conference attracted scholars from across the country with Dean, faculty of humanities and social sciences Al- Hikmah university, prof Lateef Oladimeji presenting the lead paper.
The MURIC director who delivered the keynote address at the conference, berated politicians for denigrating traditional institutions “for their inordinate ambition.”

He said: “Our politicians are exploiting our traditional rulers. When they want to get to power, they go to them; when they get to power, they used them, they tyranised them.
“We believe it is a spill over of colonialism, after independence, we should not have allowed the law to remain in our constitution, if truly we are independent.”
In his address, the vice chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Prof Noah Yusuf, who was represented by the university’s Deputy vice-chancellor, Dr. Sikiru Nurudeen, enjoined Islamic scholars to return to the old ways of making education and research a priority in solving challenges facing them.
National cordinator, IWF, Dr. Hassan Kalejaiye and the state coordinator of the foundation, Ishaq Sabi, and chairman of the local organizing committee, Dr Yusuf Suleiman, said the essence of the conference was to encourage muslims to embrace technology in addressing contemporary challenges facing them.
