Muslims celebrate Hijrah New Year

Over 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide are celebrating the new Islamic year (1st Muharram, 1440 AH) today.The Hijrah is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days.

Over 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide are celebrating the new Islamic year (1st Muharram, 1440 AH) today.The Hijrah is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. The event depends on the movement of the moon. The beginning of each month is marked by the observance of a new moon seen for the first time.

However, the Osun and Oyo governments have declared today a public holiday to mark the ceremony.In a statement by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Adebisi Obawale, Osun residents were tasked on peace and tolerance.In another statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Ishmaeel Olalekan Ali, Oyo Muslims were urged to pray for peace and unity of the nation.
