The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Sunday joined the international community in marking the International Day of Peace, restating its commitment to dialogue, unity and collective security.
The event, observed annually on 21 September, was commemorated under the theme “Act Now for a Peaceful World.” The NAF said peace should be understood as more than the absence of conflict, but also as cooperation and shared progress.
The force noted that while protecting Nigeria’s airspace remains its main mandate, it contributes to wider peace efforts through deterrence, disaster relief, humanitarian operations and international cooperation. According to the statement, exercises with global partners build trust and strengthen the international security framework.
The NAF also highlighted its engagement with local communities through medical services, empowerment initiatives and civil-military relations aimed at fostering dialogue and confidence. It said that protecting civilians and building mutual trust remain central to its operations.
“Peace is achievable when we act together,” the statement read, adding that the force remains committed to contributing to a safer and more secure Nigeria.
The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 and first observed in 1982. Initially tied to the opening of the UN General Assembly, it was fixed in 2001 to be marked every 21 September. The day calls for 24 hours of non-violence and encourages governments, institutions and individuals to work towards reconciliation.
This year’s theme highlights the need for joint action to address conflicts, environmental challenges and inequalities that undermine peace globally. Across countries, events marking the day included dialogues, cultural programmes and symbolic peace activities.
NAF said its participation in these operations shows the country’s commitment to international stability.
