MEMBERS of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) at the weekend called on those they alleged were behind the current travails of Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to stop and allow him focus on his assignment in the National Assembly.

NANSMEMBERS of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) at the weekend called on those they alleged were behind the current travails of Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to stop and allow him focus on his assignment in the National Assembly.

Addressing newsmen in Ilorin, Kwara State capital at the end of its inauguration in Ilorin, Co-ordinator of Zone “C” of the association, Salau Habib, said that the students were convinced that Saraki is being persecuted by some political heavyweights.

Although he did not mention names of the politicians responsible for the development, Salau, who was surrounded by several members of the zonal co-ordinating council, warned that the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) should not be turned into a puppet in the hands of selfish politicians.

He said: “NANS Zone C in her inaugural meeting deliberated on the nation and issues that bother on the unity and peaceful co-existence. The new leadership condemns in strong terms the continuous persecution of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.

“This is coming on the background of the revelations at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Since Saraki’s emergence as the Senate President, the CCT has been constantly and persistently used in victimising him. No doubt the emerging revelation has shown that it is a concerted effort to ridicule, humiliate and subject the Senate President to public disgrace.

“Some politicians who never wanted the Senate President to succeed in his assignment have done everything possible to truncate his political career. Some of them feel that so long as he is in office, they won’t be able to manipulate things their way in the National Assembly.”

The students, who also said that the ongoing trial of Saraki is a violation of his human rights and warned that the Senate President should no longer be distracted from focusing on his highly demanding job, expressed concern that the trial is coming 12 years after Saraki had made his assets declaration to the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
