Plans to block, shut down Customs’ headquarters, zonal offices
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding action against the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) alleged corruption scandal.
In a statement signed by its President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, NANS expressed deep concern and outrage over a recent multi-billion naira alleged corruption scandal involving senior officials of the NCS.
Akinteye, who condemned the widespread alleged corruption and abuse of power within the Customs as revealed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation, said: “It is unacceptable that at least 40 NCS personnel, including high-ranking officials, have been implicated in this scandal.
“Despite the gravity of the allegations and the substantial evidence gathered by the EFCC, these officials have not faced prosecution or any meaningful consequences for their actions.”
The statement, which emphasised the refusal of Nigerian students to tolerate corruption undermining the integrity of institutions and eroding public trust, demanded accountability and transparency from the Customs and the EFCC in addressing the corruption scandal.
It expressed concern over lack of accountability at the leadership level within the NCS.
“The Controller-General of Customs must be held accountable for the actions of his subordinates and take decisive action to root out corruption from within the organisation,” the statement stated.
The NANS President questioned why officials implicated in the scandal remained in service while emphasizing the need for justice and accountability.
He, therefore, call for justice, transparency and accountability, asserting that Nigerian students would not allow the corruption scandal to be swept under the carpet.
