Nasarawa poly shut as students protest
The Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic in Nasarawa State has been shut down indefinitely, following students’ protest against alleged fee hike.
The students had accused the management of the polytechnic of hiking the late registration fee and closure of registration portal. The protest led to the vandalism of the administration block and the rector’s car, burning of the security post, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) block, and other structures in the institution.
President of Nasarawa State Students Union, Hamisu Ladan, who was part of the protest, told newsmen that the students were protesting because of the increment in late registration fees from N5,000 to N10,000 and closure of the registration portal.
But the Rector, Dr. Justina Kotso, denied increment of fees and closure of registration portal.
She explained that the management was in the meeting over issues the students were raising over the registration portal when the unrest started.
Kotso said the school had been closed for a week to enable the management committee to investigate the cause of the unrest in the school.
“Our school portal is still open right now. In the portal, I have about 162 students who registered today when the protest was ongoing,” she said.
