We have credible evidence against Gusau, say lawmakers
Zamfara State House of Assembly has confirmed the appointment of Sen. Hassan Nasiha as the new deputy governor, following his nomination by Governor Bello Matawalle.

After the impeachment of Mahdi Gusau from office as deputy governor for gross misconduct and abuse of office, yesterday, Matawalle, in a letter signed by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Kabiru Balarabe, and read at plenary by Speaker Nasiru Magarya, nominated Nasiha as his new deputy.

Majority Leader of the House, Faruku Dosara (APC, Maradun 1), moved the motion for the confirmation of Nasiha, who represents Zamfara Central in the Senate, and was unanimously approved by the lawmakers.

The Speaker said the Senator’s nomination was unanimously approved by the House, due to his track record of service.

“The house has approved the appointment of Nasiha as the new deputy governor of the state in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended,” he said.

Gusau’s impeachment followed the adoption of a motion by Dosara at plenary in Gusau. The motion came shortly after the House adopted the report of Justice Haladu Tanko’s panel, which investigated alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office against the deputy governor.

Magarya, who presided over the sitting, directed the Clerk, Saidu Anka, to conduct a voice vote on the impeachment of Gusau. Twenty of the 22 lawmakers present voted in favour of the impeachment and the deputy governor was pronounced impeached.

Beside a Notice of Impeachment served the former deputy governor by the House on February 7, the state Chief Judge, Justice Kulu Aliyu, had also, on February 14, inaugurated a panel to probe him following a request by the lawmakers on February 10.

MEANWHILE, the House has expressed confidence in the witnesses presented at the investigative panel.

Counsel to the lawmakers/complainant and Director, Legal Matters of Zamfara Assembly, Nasiru Jangebe, stated this while speaking with newsmen after the maiden sitting of the impeachment panel which held at the State High Court 4, Gusau.

“You know, we have mentioned our case and led seven witnesses before the panel and the matter was adjourned till Tuesday for address. We are satisfied with all our submissions. We believe that the witnesses are credible and unchallengeable,” he said.

On the restraining order given by the Federal High Court Abuja, Jangebe said when that order was issued, there was no impeachment process against the deputy governor.

“By the provision of the Constitution, once the impeachment process starts, no court should interfere in the matter. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, that order will not affect this process,” he explained.

The deputy governor, who is the defendant, was absent at the sitting on Tuesday, and did not even sent representative.
