National Humanitarian Summit to tackle Nigeria’s growing crisis

Nigeria’s humanitarian landscape is set to take centre stage as key global and national figures prepare to headline the National Humanitarian Summit 2025. Scheduled for 8 May at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, the summit will explore strategies to strengthen humanitarian efforts in response to the country’s escalating crises.

Under the theme “Strengthening Humanitarian Efforts for a Resilient Nation,” the event will bring together government officials, stakeholders, and humanitarian actors to address the urgent needs of millions of Nigerians affected by conflict, displacement, and economic instability. Among the distinguished speakers are former Liberian Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor, renowned environmental scientist Prof. Hilary Iyang, leadership expert Dr Linus Okorie, and Prof. Olufolake Abdulrazaq, First Lady of Kwara State.

With over 20 million Nigerians requiring humanitarian assistance, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the summit comes at a crucial time. The impact of terrorism, climate-related disasters, and economic hardship has intensified the country’s humanitarian burden, making effective response strategies more vital than ever.

Government support remains a key factor in mitigating these crises. Strengthening humanitarian infrastructure, ensuring adequate funding, and enhancing policy frameworks are among the critical steps needed to provide sustainable relief and recovery for affected communities.

Beyond government intervention, the role of stakeholders—including international organisations, civil society groups, and the private sector—is pivotal. By fostering collaboration, mobilising resources, and investing in local capacity-building, humanitarian actors can drive long-term solutions that empower communities to withstand future challenges.

Stakeholder engagement also facilitates innovative approaches to aid delivery, ensuring assistance reaches the most vulnerable populations efficiently. The summit aims to create a platform for dialogue, where key players can share insights, develop partnerships, and forge a collective path towards a more resilient Nigeria.

As preparations for the summit intensify, organisers are calling on all relevant parties—including NGOs, policymakers, business leaders, and media professionals—to participate in shaping the future of Nigeria’s humanitarian response. With high-profile speakers set to lead discussions, the event presents a unique opportunity to influence policy and strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to handle crises.
