NBC places Kano stations on black map of hate speech campaign

Head of NBC, Kano zonal office, Adamu Salisu disclosed the development on Monday at a Media dialogue organized by the Kano Peace Committee ahead of the 2023 elections.

Salisu explained that the red flag become pertinent following the dangerous political campaign trend on local radio and television stations in recent times.

The NBC State Officer reminded us that broadcast media has the critical role of ensuring decent social engagement and is ethically responsible for not allowing selfish political interests to overwhelm the peace and tranquillity of society.

He cautioned that NBC will not hesitate to sanction any erring station that promotes statements that contravene national security, adding that practitioners must be guided by NBC’s code of conduct during political campaigns in Kano.

Spokesperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Kano headquarters, Adam Maulu highlighted the critical roles of media in the success of elections and urged practitioners to be guided by requisite knowledge of the Law and electoral guidelines for proper coverage of next year’s election.

Maulu maintained that journalists must rise above ethnic and religious profiling while discharging their professional duty to enable INEC to conduct credible, free and transparent elections.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Christians Association of Nigeria, (CAN), Kano chapter, Bishop of Kano, John Namaza appealed to political elites to guide utterances capable of truncating the peaceful atmosphere before and during the election in Kano.

Namaza who doubles as co-chairman of the peace committee said the intention of the dialogue was to admonish media organisations to promote peace and education electoral on the electoral process
He cautioned the media organisations to be wary of selfish political interests who may want to use their platform to promote violence in Kano.

The Head of the Secretariat Kano Peace Committee, Ibrahim A Waiya, explained that the committee would soon engage political stakeholders to sign the peace accord to promote violence-free elections in Kano.
