NCF, Unizik plant 1,500 trees to help tackle climate change
The Director General of the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), Dr. Joseph Onoja, has described its Green Recovery Nigeria Project as part of efforts aimed at reclaiming the country’s dwindling forest cover.
Addressing newsmen during a tree planting exercise in Awka, Anambra State, Onoja disclosed that NCF, in collaboration with Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (Unizik), has planted 1,500 trees in Anambra State to help tackle climate change, and forestall recent flooding of communities in the state.
Onoja stated that Stanbic IBTC bank is sponsoring the project, as one of NCF’s partners, while Unizik provided 10 hectares of land within the campus premises in Awka.
Under the project, Onoja disclosed that 100 trees were planted in Unizik, and 1,400 were planted at Nnewi Ichi erosion sites. He noted that species of trees include: local pear, local apple, avocado, soursop, breadfruit, cashew, and local mango, among others.
According to him, NCF launched an ambitious project christened, ‘Green Recovery Nigeria Project’ aimed at restoring Nigeria’s forest cover in the next 30 years.
