NCoS condoles family of officer killed in Kogi jailbreak

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the death of Senior Correctional Assistant Shuaibu David during an attempted jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State.
In a statement on Tuesday, the NCoS spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, said the incident occurred on March 24, 2025, when inmates tampered with padlocks in one section of the facility, allowing twelve prisoners to escape.
Abubakar noted that five of the escaped inmates have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the others.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service regrets to announce the tragic demise of Senior Correctional Assistant Shuaibu King David during the unfortunate escape incident at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, on 24 March, 2025,” the statement read.
“SCA Shuaibu David, in the line of duty, bravely stood his ground in an effort to prevent the escape of inmates and protect the integrity of the custodial centre. His courageous sacrifice reflects his unwavering dedication to service and national security. His service and ultimate sacrifice will forever be remembered and honoured.”
The Acting Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, extended condolences to David’s family, colleagues, and loved ones, describing his actions as a reflection of dedication to duty and national security.
The NCoS stated that it is working with other security agencies and local communities to recapture the remaining escapees. It also announced plans to strengthen security measures across custodial centres to prevent future incidents.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service is working closely with relevant security agencies and communities to recapture those still at large and bring them to justice. Additionally, measures are being taken to enhance security in all custodial centres across the country to prevent such occurrences in the future. The Service remains committed to ensuring the safety of officers and the security of custodial facilities nationwide,” the statement added.

Koton-Karfe custodial centre has previously experienced jailbreaks. In 2016, over 13 inmates escaped following heavy rainfall that weakened the facility’s walls. Similar incidents occurred in 2020 during the #EndSARS protests, leading to the release of numerous inmates across several states.
