The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Kano Strategic Command, has intensified its crackdown on drug-related activities with a targeted raid around Bayero University Kano, leading to the arrest of six suspects.

The operation, carried out at the university’s old site and surrounding areas, also resulted in the dismantling of several drug joints believed to be hubs for illicit substance distribution and consumption.

The enforcement action followed rising concerns over the increasing use of areas around tertiary institutions for drug trafficking and abuse, a development security agencies say poses risks to students, staff, and host communities.

Confirming the development in a statement on Monday, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano Strategic Command, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics Sadiq Maigatari, said the raid was executed under the leadership of the Commander, CN DY Lawal.

According to him, six suspects were apprehended during the operation, while substances and materials linked to the illegal trade were seized and destroyed.

“This action demonstrates our commitment to ensuring a drug-free environment where students, staff and their families can live and work in safety. We will never relent. We will continue to dislodge and occupy all drug joints under Operation Sharar Mafaka,” the statement added.

The command noted that the exercise underscores the importance of collaboration between the NDLEA and educational institutions in tackling drug abuse and related crimes.

It also commended the management of Bayero University for promptly alerting authorities and supporting the operation.

The agency warned against the use of academic environments as safe havens for drug-related activities, stressing that such practices would be met with firm enforcement.

Members of the public and institutions were also urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to assist ongoing efforts to identify and dismantle drug networks across the state.
