A newborn baby was left at the mercy of death at a waste bin in front of Mile 3 Park, Diobu Port Harcourt but was rescued early morning Friday by a Vigilante group.

The baby, who was less than 6 hours old was dumped with her umbilical cord in a carton wrapped with a piece clothe.

In an interview with the Chief Security Officer of Nkpolu Oroworukwo community, Mile 3 Diobu under the Diobu Vigilante, Godstime Ihunwo, said while on routine patrol he heard a cry from the waste bin and approaching to see what was inside the bin, found the baby in a critical state.

According to him: “At about 3 am this morning Friday morning 28th April 2023 while on routine patrol I discovered a newborn baby which is less than 6 hours old. At the point of discovery, the baby was still wrapped in clothes and placenta.

“I rescued the child and immediately called a female nurse for urgent medical attention to be given to the baby. Upon inspection by the nurse, the baby was discovered to be a female.

“I called Prince Wiro, a Human Rights Activist who immediately came to my office and accompanied me to Nkpolu Police station to make a formal complaint,” he explained.

He, however, appealed to the Rivers State Government to prevail on the contractors in charge of Ikwerre road street lights to ensure the lights are always on at night, noting that nobody could have dumped a baby in the area if the place is well-lit.

Also, the coordinator of Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign Prince Wiro has condemned the action of the unknown mother who left the newborn baby at the mercy of death.

Wiro who described the action of the unknown mother as inhumane, advised young females who think they cannot take care of a child after giving birth to seek help by approaching the relevant Government Ministry in charge of children’s welfare rather than throwing away the baby.

Meanwhile, confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko said the baby girl was found alive and effort is on to take the baby to a motherless baby home while an investigation is still in progress.
