NIFST urges FG to invest in food scientists
The Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST) has urged the Federal Government to prioritise support for food scientists to address food security and safety challenges in the country.
Dr Bola Osinowo, the President of NIFST, made this appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday.
According to him, food science plays an integral role in food security, while the nation faces challenges caused by a growing population and reduced resources.
Underscoring the necessity of government support, Osinowo noted that food science offered solutions to tackle the complex challenge of food security by improving food supply stability and reducing waste.
“To prioritise and support food scientists in Nigeria, the government can consider offering scholarships and grants to students pursuing degrees in food science and related fields.
“Another area is providing training and capacity-building programmes to students to enhance their skills and knowledge.
“They can also establish internship and fellowship programmes to provide hands-on experience and mentorship,” Osinowo said.

The NIFST president emphasised the need for research and development funding, including research grants and innovation hubs, for food scientists.
He stressed the importance of infrastructure and equipment such as state-of-the-art laboratories and food testing equipment, adding that this would support food scientists in their work.
Osinowo underscored the importance of instituting robust policies, stringent food safety regulations, and rigorous standards to ensure a secure and sustainable food system.
In addition, he said recognition and incentives, such as awards and competitive salaries, were also important for food scientists.
“The support for food scientists can also lead to enhanced food quality, as standards and certification programmes will ensure that food products meet quality and safety standards.
“There is no gainsaying that a thriving food industry can contribute to economic growth, create jobs and improve livelihoods,” Osinowo said.
The NIFST boss also urged the government to support local food production and processing to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported food products
