Niger gov’s wife links crime to drug abuse

Wife of Niger State Governor, Dr. Amina Abubakar Bello has described as shocking, the high rate of drug abuse and addiction among youth in the country saying that this has contributed to the increase in social vices including insurgency.

The Governor’s Wife pointed out that studies have shown that most criminals were in the habit of taking hard drugs each time they were about to engage in their so called operations including the insurgents.

Dr. Amina Bello stated this shortly after breaking fast with inmates at the Niger State Social Rehabilitation Center in Minna at the weekend.

She observed that Nigerians must begin the fight against crimes and insurgency right from their homes and immediate environs by showing love to people who have been rehabilitated after the abuse of drugs to discourage them from returning to drugs and addiction.

According to her “I appeal to all of you to show some love to addicts who have been rehabilitated when they return to the society to give them a sense of belonging and accept them without stigmatization to enable them feel free and not return to drugs”.

She noted that it is the sense of abandonment and the feeling that people don’t understand or love them that makes them return to doing drugs so she and her entourage decided to break our fast with them to show them that the society loves them and that leaders understand all that they are going through.

“We are also here to let them know that at whatever time they leave the rehab center, we are willing to accept them back into the society without stigmatization so that they can live normal lives again’, she added.

The Governor’s wife advised the inmates to stay away from the things that led them to the rehabilitation center and urged them to take the skills they have learnt while in the center to be better people in the society and contribute to the development of the State and the Country.
