Niger LG polls: Vulnerable settlements, IDPs, riverine communities to participate

Communities confronted by security challenges, Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, as well as riverine areas, would actively participate in the November 1 local council elections in Niger State.

Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission. (NSIEC), Mohammed Jibrin Imam gave the assurance during a pre-election briefing and distribution of sensitive election materials ahead of the weekend’s polls, in the presence of stakeholders and security agencies, yesterday, in Minna.

He explained that the non-sensitive materials had been duly delivered to the 25 Local Councils Electoral Officers (EOs), while the distribution of sensitive materials is being done early to avoid unforeseen logistical problems.

Imam hinted that the materials are being distributed to the 4,950 polling units, 274 wards and the 25 local council areas, consisting of both councillorship and chairmanship materials for the elections.

The NSIEC boss emphasised that full constitutional processes were strictly followed to avoid complaints.

He called on political actors and parties to adhere strictly to the signed peace accord, promising to ensure a level playing ground for all, while the commission remains open to complaints.
