CAN President: Nigeria bedeviled by insecurity, kidnapping, killings
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has expressed optimism of a greater future for Nigeria notwithstanding the myriad of challenges presently besetting the country.

Exuding cheerfulness, Prof Osinbajo spoke at the 62nd Independence Day anniversary service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, yesterday, ahead of Nigeria’s October 1 Independence Day celebrations.

He said: “The future of Nigeria will be far more glorious, more peaceful than her past, and so it shall be for you too. Every year will be happier for you, more glorious, more prosperous and more peaceful, in Jesus’ name.”

According to the Vice President, “we stand at the gates of a new nation. And we see its lights shining bright; the nation of God’s promises, a nation of opportunities, equity and justice, a secure and prosperous nation, a nation of laws and righteousness.

“Even if what we see today seems bleak and dark, we are confident that God who owns the heavens and the earth will fulfill His promises concerning this nation.”

Congratulating His Eminence, Archbishop Daniel C. Okoh, the new President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and all the new CAN executives, Osinbajo said although the present situation in the country appears bleak, God will fulfill His promise concerning the nation.

“Not a word will fail regarding any good thing which the Lord had spoken to Nigeria. All will come to pass in Jesus’ name,” the Vice President assured, in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande.

Meanwhile, Okoh has said that the wicked will not rule the land in Nigeria. The CAN president noted that “2023 is the year of our test as a nation,” adding that instead of taking up arms to kill each other and terrify innocent Nigerians, adults in this nation should take up their voters’ cards and go to the polls.

He lamented that at 62, Nigeria is still bedeviled by insecurity, kidnapping, unnecessary killing and decapitation of innocent citizens and social injustice that has put many in distress and has made many citizens angry.

In his sermon titled, ‘Those that wait on the Lord shall inherit the land,’ Okoh noted that that on October 1, 1960, Nigerians celebrated the nation’s Independence with great enthusiasm and expectations that Nigeria would become a great nation that would be the pride of Africa and indeed black man.

He observed that for the greater part of her years of independence, Nigeria has had its share of political instability but from 1999 till today, the country has not experienced any military insurgency and forceful imposition of dictatorial rulers in the nation.

Okoh stated that though Nigeria has had 23 years of uninterrupted democracy, the nation is still struggling and grappling with so many issues of collective concern.

He said: “We are bedeviled by insecurity, kidnapping, unnecessary killing and decapitation of innocent citizens, diminishing value of human life and social injustice that has put many in distress and has made many citizens angry. For many it appears that the wicked is winning all, taking all and enjoying all.

“Many are worried and even afraid that the wicked is about to take over the rulership of the land as we witness desecration of worship places, violent threat to the seat of political power, cheating, blatant stealing of our oil, flagrant degradation of our human environment, denial, betrayal, rejection and outright exclusion in many areas of our existence as a nation.

“It seems the wicked is having its way by making fortunes out of evil practices with impunity; and terrifying the upright, the pure, the meek, the voiceless, the honest and the hardworking individuals in our society. However, in the midst of all these, there is hope.”
