Nigeria launches first interconnected mini-grid

Nigeria, yesterday, launched its first interconnected mini-grid.

Adelabu, who spoke at the commissioning of a 352.24kWp mini-grid project at Toto community in Nasarawa State, said government’s reforms in the power sector are beginning with distribution companies.

He said while the national grid requires urgent attention, the process could only be completed in a mid to long term timeframe.

Adelabu said mini-grid would be deployed in the interim while the Federal Government gradually resolves challenges facing the grid.

The mini-grid project, built in collaboration with Powergen Nigeria Limited and Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC), is regarded as the first of its kind in Nigeria.

Managing Director of Rural Electrification Agency, Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, said successful completion of the project is a testament to the power of partnership and innovation in driving rural electrification in Nigeria.

He said: “The REA remains committed to fostering an environment which encourages similar sustainable and impactful projects nationwide.”

Managing Director of AEDC, Christopher Ezeafulukwe, said the collaboration with Powergen and REA in the Toto mini-grid project underscores the significant role of distribution companies in supporting renewable energy initiatives and enhancing the grid with sustainable energy solutions for underserved communities.
