Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and IDPs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim

The Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and IDPs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, disclosed this in an interview after the launch of the National Policy on Internally Displaced Persons in Abuja, said her commission has been working hard to make sure that the refugees are safe and settled.

She explained that what the government was doing was to put the right framework in place to address the situation.
According to her: “This new policy will help to institutionalise the framework, everybody knows his or her role and takes ownership of it from the local government level, right to the national level.”

Earlier during the launch, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq, assured that the Federal Government was determined to tackle the challenges of internally displaced persons in the country, by ensuring that they are given the necessary assistance and protection, rehabilitation and safe return to their respective homes after their displacement.

The minister said the policy, which was approved by the Federal Executive Council in September 2021, is meant to provide a framework for national responsibility towards prevention and protection of citizens, and in some cases non-citizens from incidences of all forms of internal displacement.

“This policy envisions an equitable and stable Nigerian society that is proactive and responsive to situations that concern internally displaced persons, where the right to dignity is guaranteed for all internally displaced persons, and where adequate measures and durable solutions exist to prevent and mitigate the impact of internal displacement on the vulnerable population.”

To ensure efficient, effective implementation of the policy, Farouq charged the national coordination technical committee and other relevant stakeholders to immediately commence elaboration of the implementation plan, ensuring clear roles and responsibilities for all actors.
