Nigeria seeks stronger partnership with Meta

The Federal Government is working to ensure Nigeria has a strategic partnership with the social media platform, Meta, owners of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram in the country.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, disclosed this yesterday, when he met with Meta’s Senior Vice President for Global Policy, Kevin Martin, and Vice President for Public Policy for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey, Kojo Boakye.

According to a post on X on the meeting, discussions focused on strengthening Nigeria-Meta relations, promoting responsible digital governance, enhancing fact-checking, and supporting constructive digital discourse.

Tuggar emphasised Nigeria’s commitment to working with global tech companies to ensure digital platforms contribute positively to national development, democratic resilience, and regional stability.

At the meeting, Meta expressed readiness to support initiatives that enhance information integrity, responsible digital engagement, and collaboration with Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Data from napoleoncat.com claims there were 47.8 million Facebook users in Nigeria as of April 2025, which accounted for 20 per cent of the population. The majority of users were men, at 57.1 per cent. People aged 25 to 34 years were the largest user group (17 400 000).

The highest difference between men and women occurred within people aged 35 to 44, where men lead by 5, 300, 000. According to Meta Artificial Intelligence (AI), Nigeria has a significant number of WhatsApp users, with 51 million active users as of April 2024, making it the 10th largest user base globally. This represented about two per cent of WhatsApp’s billions of monthly active users worldwide.
