The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) says it will strictly focus on winning medals for the nation during the forthcoming Rio Olympic Games.

Tunde Popoola, the Secretary-General of NOC, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos that Nigeria would not be in Brazil for jamboree.

He assured that the nation’s contingent would include only athletes who would win laurels.

“We are not going for funfair, we are in for serious business and won’t entertain any form of carnival.

“It is only the participating athletes and other people like the coaches and technical crew needed that will be on the contingent.

“Gone are the days of wastage. There is no point of going with people who do not have valuable contributions to the Games,” he said.

Popoola said that the processes of procurement of visas would commence immediately qualifiers have been concluded.

“We don’t intend to serialise the processes of visas in bits. We want to do it all at once to avoid any form of omissions. Doing this collectively will help us,’’ Popoola said.

NAN reports that 41 athletes from seven sports have so far qualified for the Olympics.

The sports are athletics, basketball, canoe slalom, rowing, table tennis, wrestling and football.
