A Civil Society Organization, Inclusive Friends Association, has tasked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to change the narrative and work towards improving the rights of the over 30 million persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

The Executive Director of the organization, Mrs. Grace Jerry, in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja, stressed that inclusive governance was imperative to actualizing the dividends of democracy. She lamented that policymakers have not implemented policies that will change the lives of the PWDs

She stressed that to change the narrative, the President and state governments should commit to affirmative action to ensure that at least, 10 per cent of all political appointments were reserved for qualified persons with disability.

She also urged the President to commit to influencing the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to develop and implement a special disability social protection scheme to cover out-of-pocket expenses on health by persons with disabilities.

Jerry also urged the government to through an executive order (temporarily) and then through the finance bill (permanently), ensured that import duties are waived on the importation of assistive devices for persons with disability, thereby making it affordable.

She also called on the executive arm of government to sign the National Trust Fund Bill into law, and fully implement it by the already existing Nigeria Commission for Persons with Disability (NCPWD).

The ED further called on the National Assembly members to commit to champion tax rebate for employers complying with the five per cent disability quota as incentives through an act of parliament.
