Eye centre organises contests to mark anniversary
Viewpoint Specialist Eye Centre has celebrated its 10 years anniversary with a series of events such as an essay competition for students of Baptist High School, Obanikoro, Lagos.
The essay competition aimed at promoting English language and reading culture among secondary school students. The Chief Executive Officer and Founding Director of the centre, Dr. Agatha Afolabi, said the essay competition was sponsored by the family of renowned English scholar and the author of the Brighter Grammar series, the late Phebean Ogundipe, which was the second in the series of annual essay competitions in public secondary schools in Lagos.
She said a panel of experts from the ophthalmic group practice and other relevant organisations were the contest judges. She said: “The Ogundipe family also donated books and educational equipment to the junior and senior categories of the school to facilitate the teaching and learning of English Language in schools.”
The celebration also featured a symposium, titled Artificial Intelligence in Eye Care. An eye care expert at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Lagos, Prof. Bola Adekoya, described artificial intelligence as the theory and development of computer systems in order to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.
Chairman of Viewpoint Specialist Eye Centre, Mr. David Sauta, encouraged upcoming eye care specialists to invest more in educating the younger generation about the knowledge and importance of eye care service as this can improve their sight in general.
