Farmer shoots two dead in Ogun, threatens to kill eight more

The agrarian town of Iwoye-Yewa in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State was thrown into pandemonium following the alleged killing of two prominent members of the town by a middle-aged farmer, Oladosu Nureni.

The incident, according to a source and a member of the community, who spoke to The Guardian under condition of anonymity, occurred on Wednesday.It was learnt that the two victims, Ajayi Onifade, who was the Amuludun of Iwoyeland, and Olatunji Ayinla, were allegedly shot at two different occasions by the suspect.

Narrating the incident to The Guardian, the source said Nureni, who lives very close to the late Onifade, shot him at close range while mounting his motorcycle en-route his farm on Wednesday morning.He added that Ayinla, the second victim was however, shot by Nureni during a manhunt for him and died on the spot. Onifade, according to the source, later gave up the ghost on Friday night at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, where he was taken to for treatment.

The suspect was as at the time of filing this report reported to be prowling the town, threatening to kill eight more persons and anyone who attempts to apprehend him. The eldest child of Ajayi Onifade, Seyi, said the matter was immediately reported at the Ilaro Division of the Nigeria Police Force but expressed his disappointment that the suspect was yet to be apprehended by the police.

He alleged that efforts by the community to launch a serious manhunt for the suspect, with the view of apprehending him were being thwarted by the police.
Seyi said urgent action must be taken to arrest the suspect who has continued to instill fear into the residents of Iwoye town, by threatening to deal ruthlessly with everybody who dared to be part of the search party for him. This action, according to Seyi, has forced many residents to flee the community.

When contacted, the spokesman of the Ogun State police command, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he was not aware of the incident. Oyeyemi, who told The Guardian on the phone that he was on his way to Abeokuta from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, however, promised to get in touch with the DPO in charge of Ilaro Divisional Police Headquarters, to confirm the incident. But as at the time of filing this report, Oyeyemi was yet to get back to The Guardian to confirm the incident. A phone call made to him to remind him of his promise was neither picked nor replied yesterday evening.
